🛑 Stop selling a product without breaking reorders

Archive, don't delete: how to retire a product or variant so customers still have something to reorder.

Written by Miles

When you stop selling something, how you remove it decides what your customers see on their reorder page.

✅ Do this

  1. Pick the replacement product, if there is one

  2. In Easy Reorder, go to Products, tick the old product and click Substitute product. Pick the replacement and click Save substitution

  3. In Shopify, archive the old product. Don't delete it

No replacement? In Easy Reorder, go to Products and turn reminders off for the old product. Archiving it in Shopify doesn't always stop its reminders.

Customers who bought the old product now see the replacement. It starts on its first variant, and they can pick another option if it has one.

❌ Why not delete?

  • A deleted product or variant is gone from Shopify, so the reorder page can't show it or add it to the cart

  • A substitution can't replace a deleted product on the reorder page

  • If you delete one size (a variant), that size drops off the customer's "Your previous order". Other sizes of the product still show

Already deleted it? The reorder page can't show it again. Customers can still buy the replacement from your store.
